Toronto Blue Jays Take the Field Without Halladay in 2010

By: Jason Andre

The buzz of baseball near the end of the season was all about Halladay possibly going to the Phillies. While the Toronto Blue Jays did not manage to get the deal done by the trading deadline, Halladay was moved during the off-season in the biggest trade of the winter. The question is how will Toronto replace the HOF arm and can they contend in 2010 after losing a star like Halladay?

One of the biggest problems that is staring Toronto right in the face for 2010 is how they perform on the road. They were a dismal 31-50 when the left their friendly confines and their success this season will have a lot more to do with keeping their game together on the road than it will losing Halladay.

Starting pitching should not be a problem for Toronto this season. For whatever reason, they always seem to bring a stacked deck to spring training every year. One of the pitchers that will be expected to fill in for Halladay is the ever-improving Shaun Marcum. He has showed progression and it is a matter of can he come back to form and have the season that he had in 2008?

Another young gun that will be leaned on is Ricky Romero. At 25 years old, he is poised to be a star in this league as he has a big arm and the potential to strike out 10 or more batters every time that he takes the mound. While he is obviously not Halladay, he gives them a better than average chance of nothing a win every time he walks on that diamond. Look for him to have a true breakout season and solidify his position in the rotation for a long time to come.

When you look up and down the line-up, the one player that starts the hairs on the back of the neck tingling is second basemen, Aaron Hill. While he showed some long ball potential in 2007, it was nothing like what we saw in 2009. Coming off of a marred season in 2008, he showed incredible power at the plate by hitting 36 home runs. That is 8 more home runs than he hit in his previous four seasons in the majors. If he can get that average up just a little bit, we are looking at true star. He may go from Comeback Player of the Year to League MVP in 2010.

The Toronto Blue Jays have a lot of reason to look forward to the start of the season as they get some early games against non-division foes. They can get their pitching in shape and get those bats hot for when Boston comes to town on April 26. If they can blow through KC, Baltimore and Texas and split their games against the contenders, the ballpark should be packed for each and every game of that series. Get ready for a great ride in 2010 because there is massive potential on this team to once again fight for the division title.
