Here come the ants beware and arm yourself with control techniques

By: robert jeffries

The ordinary garden ant will colonise any surface and especially any soft sandy substrate which they are more likely to bury into to set up property.

This burrowing activity means that nests can spell up to 3 meters deep and will reoccur every year if they are not effectively controlled. This is why it is essential that curb is swift and handy because if not after that these pests will pop up year after year and you will spend hundreds of pounds during that spell trying to control the nest.

A typical black ant nest will contain around 18,000 individuals and each one has an vital role in the success of the nest. Inside the nest, there is only one queen whose sole purpose is to lay eggs. Theses eggs are tended by worker ants that are also responsible for building, repairing and extending the nest. The workers will also tour out and forage for food and bring it back to the nest and feed others.

Countless citizens suspect ant curb is about controlling the ants that they see walking about but this is incorrect. The ants you see are only a small fraction of the population and by the time you eradicate theses, they have already been replaced by the queens' ability to lay eggs at a phenomenal rate.

I bear in mind my mother when faced with an ants nest used to boil up the kettle an pour boiling water on and around the nest entrance believe the hot water would leach into the nest and boil the ants however this does not perform. Ants nests are water proof if this was not the case next the ants would be flooded out every time it rained. Their nest is constructed in the style of layers of soil separated by small pillars of soil, in other words it is like a mini shopping mall but without the escalators.

So in short the only sure fire way to eradicate a nest is using insecticide and this is either in spray kind, gel or powder, I would always go for the spray for a heavy nest trouble and firstly locate the entrance and spray one meter either side of the entrance and above it also so n matter which direction the ants voyage after that they will come into contact with the poison and die. The spray needs to be reapplied after each rain shower. If you cannot see the entrance then the ideal course is the gel. This works by the workers feeding off it and taking it back to the nest where they feed the queen and other workers and control off the nest.
