Do not Let Anxiety Stand In The Way Of Your PPL

By: Clayton Karle

The lone thing holding many individuals back from obtaining their PPL is fear.

Fear is something all of us must overcome sometimes. Whether we plan to admit it or not, there are many things creating fear in our lives. And when we decide to do something out of the ordinary, it can be an thrilling moment. But with that exhilaration frequently comes fear. Fear of failure is generally the top thing on our list.

It really is not a good feeling to fail at something. If you failed your driver's test the very first time you took it I think you can still recall the feeling. There was a hollow feeling inside your belly. Your head and posture were bent down. And you felt like that until you eventually passed.

No one likes to fail, and fear of failure is among the most terrible fears in the world.

Okay, great...now that we've established that...just how do we cope with it?

Let's review some ways to get by our fear of failure.

1. Think about the chance you are missing.

For illustration, let's say you want to be trained to fly but your fear of taking the examination puts a stop to those plans. Now imagine your life if you cannot do the one thing that you genuinely love. Look, if you want to learn to fly, surely there's a good reason why you're even considering it. If you can stay focused on the reason why you'll discover your fears slowly fade into the background.

2. Study The Alternatives

Think about what things will be like without your private pilot license. Well for starters you will turn into a frequent flyer on commercial airlines. You won't be able to go where you desire to go WHEN you would like to go there. You will be at the mercy of others. There are other modes of transportation. You could drive, take a train or ride on a bus. Focus on that, especially if the very concept of those things is very unappealing. See how fast you recover from your fear of failure then.

3. Put The Worst Case Scenario Into Perspective

Consider what occurs if you fail the PPL examination. What can happen next that's so bad you cannot get over it? There is no rule that says you can't try for a second time. You can always take the test another time. It's not like this is a one time offer. Think of how many people would not be driving cars if that were the case. If you do not pass the test, so what. All it means is you will need to wait just a little longer before you can fly.

4. Understand The Benefits Of Failure

When we fail at anything, we learn something. By understanding what you did wrong you have a greater shot of improving on it. Would you rather that you did not fail your examination only because some trainer took pity on you and ended up getting yourself killed because you really weren't ready to fly?

5. Always have a plan B

If you do fail, have a plan. Be ready for the possibility ahead of time by planning more lessons and more flight time. Failing doesn't suggest you ought to give up.

6. Taking Action Is The Answer

The best way to remove that fear is to simply go ahead and do it. The more you drag your feet, the more afraid you're going to become until you get to a point where you're unable to take your exam at all.

7. Learn From The Ancient Greeks

Ancient Greeks were known to burn their boats, giving themselves no choice but to move forward. There was no option to move back. You too have to discover a way to burn your boat. If that means picking up the phone and scheduling your examination, do it. Do not look back.
