Chaise Lounge- Indoor and Outdoor Designs

By: Susan Kramper

A chaise lounge is basically an elongated chair. The slanted back is intended for a better reclining position and the extended seating is for putting people's legs up. All the features are aimed for a comfortable seat option. Other than that, its designs are typically more lavish compared to lounge chairs allowing it to stand out in the home decorating theme.

The different framework and materials used to make a chaise lounge made the piece very versatile. There are ones that are made for indoors and there is also a wide range of those made for the outdoors. Because it is made for relaxation, most are reinforced by cushioning. Those intended for indoors are fully-upholstered and cushioned. The ones used outdoors have on top of the chair with different attachment mechanisms. Some of the outdoor designs forego cushioning especially those intended for the poolside.

An indoor chaise lounge usually has a wooden frame and covered with leather or textile. The print for the cover easily allows a piece to fit in depending on the theme décor. For instance, art nouveau and French drapery prints would blend well in a Victorian house. For more opulent settings, the legs of the chair can also be more ornate. It can be made of wood carving or sculpted metals. On the other hand, it is common to find plain textiles and rich leather as covering of a chaise lounge for contemporary themes.

The ones for outdoor use can be made of anything from fine wood, reinforced metals down to certain kinds of plastics. Just like the designs for those that are made for indoor use, outdoor lounges also have countless designs. People often choose depending on the theme they have in mind for their patio furniture. Homeowners also take advantage of the design and prints of cushions to set the atmosphere of the patio. For instance, safari themes might have use for fake animal prints for the cushions and pillows.

Recent space-saving designs also made it more economical. Because it takes up a lot of space, the idea of providing extra storage built within chaise lounges is welcomed. There are also double chaise lounges which can be enjoyed by two individuals at the same time. Some designs have expanded the back part of the chair to the side of the elongated seat. Such designs allow support for people who may want to take a nap. The same concept also made the seating more fashionable and creative especially that it enhances the form further.

A chaise lounge can also be used in bedrooms particularly the master's bedroom. If a specific room has much space, the wonderful form of this kind of seating can complete the look of the bedroom. For those who do not find it inconvenient, there are also manufacturers who would reupholster the seat with a textile chosen by the owner. This would allow homeowners to pair the upholstery with curtains and other drapery. It can also be matched with the wallpaper or other upholstered furniture in the room.
