Antarctica: No Such Thing As No Man's Land

By: Kessler Paul

Antarctica, magnificent in its beauty and unmerciful in its brutality, is a land unto itself. It is the only continent of Earth unsoiled by the wars of man. Despite the fact that battle has never reached this enormous continent, the sanitary cold kills germs to the point where men die more from violence there than illness.

Nowadays, Antarctica is a haven of scientific research and international detente, as scientists from all over the world, regardless of political relations, gather in their heated buildings in the ice cold continent and work together. In Antarctica people are able to eat four hearty meals each day and never gain an ounce because the extreme cold uses more calories than could be cut out using any diet.

During the summer months, Antarctica is bathed in endless sunlight, which gives way to what is known as the "big eye", an insomnia condition that plagues most residents, as they struggle to sleep in the bright light of day. In spite of this, the Antarctica based '300 Degree Club' has given rise to great entertainment. At the South Pole, on the continent of Antarctica, lies the least expensive, southernmost bar on the globe where residents can drink cognac, 12-year-old scotch, or beer for the same price, but the nightly bar tab can still grow to an enormous amount. The nights do not simply end in a night, they begin in April and come to a close in September.

At the heart of Antarctica, there's a mobile ice shield that's 9,000 feet across, which contains a rich deposit of coal, gas and oil that could be very useful. There are many strange laws in Antarctica; including those is the inability to extradite anyone from there, leaving it the perfect getaway spot for criminals who want to escape from justice, provided they could survive for one day in the harsh climate that numbers among the world's most unforgiving; needless to say, there's no hurry to amend those laws.

There are no laws in Antarctica, but crime happens so infrequently there it doesn't need them. If you wanted to commit a murder, you would do it in Antarctica, because you could never be prosecuted for it due to the lack of laws there. There are no statutes, nor are there treaties concerning extradition, so that a murderous felon could be brought to justice anywhere on Antarctica.

Even though the flags of 10 nation are planted in Antarctica, not a single one has tried to open up real estate there. While there has never been any serious attempts to set up a permanent colony on Antarctica, at the South Pole there is some of the most sophisticated computers and other scientific equipment available.

Even though they are only temporary, its inhabitants account for the greatest per capita IQ on earth. In no other continent will you find more people with degrees than a high school education. Having the most peaceful research out of any continent, this continent is more talent filled than any ivy-league school out there. This southern land is the only place where firing nuclear bombs is completely restricted.

The absolute strictest laws on the planet, concerning the environment, are applied to Antarctica. Whalers and sealers now need a special license to kill any animal life on the continent. The worlds best scientists are fighting to keep this astonishing continent as pristine as it has ever been.
